Description: This course surveys the history, organization, personnel and functions of libraries and information agencies in Minnesota and throughout the United States. You will learn about major theories, ideas and trends relevant to the field. You will discuss various job opportunities that exist in information agencies and allied fields. You will have opportunities to build your professional network and develop your career plan.

Topical Outline:
1. Broad history and impact of libraries and information agencies.
2. Overview of libraries and information agencies: types, functions, collections, services, personnel, MN library agencies.
3. Ethical issues in libraries and information agencies.
4. Future trends in libraries and information agencies, career preparation, professional development plan.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Engage in conversation and discussion on the history and impact of libraries and information agencies on American society with a critical lens.
2. Identify and describe roles and functions of various library personnel, types of collections and resources in libraries and information agencies; summarize MN library agencies and their unique roles.
3. Frame useful questions around major ethical issues facing libraries and information agencies in the United States.
4. Consider current trends gleaned from course to create realistic professional, academic and/or work goals.

Prerequisites:  Placement into ENGL 1110 or completion of ENGL 0900 or ENGA 0900 or ESOL 0051 or Instructor Approval
Co-requisites:  Recommended LIBT 1200, LIBT 1300 and LIBT 1410
