Description:
This course provides an overview of the Early Childhood profession including: history, program types, regulations, roles, responsibilities, developmentally appropriate practice, play, home-school connections, diversity, community resources, reflective practice, and ethics. You will learn about the multiple aspects and settings of the Early Childhood profession. Must be taken A-F.
Topical Outline:
1. History of the early childhood profession
2. Career opportunities including qualifications and roles
3. Types of early childhood programs and Minnesota rules related to home & center-based care
4. Professional Resources including Code of Ethics, Reflective Practice & community organizations
5. Play and Developmentally Appropriate Practice
6. Teaching practices that support diversity and relationships with children and families
Learning Outcomes:
1. Explain the research base and best practices in early childhood education, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of child development and learning.
2. Explore the historical, philosophical, and social foundations of early childhood education and discuss how these foundations influence current educational practices and thought.
3. Identify and explain laws related to student rights and teacher responsibilities, including educational equity, appropriate education for students with disabilities, confidentiality, and mandatory reporting requirements.
4. Examine career opportunities and educational requirements in the early childhood profession and recognize the need for ongoing professional development
5. Explore the variety of roles and responsibilities educators have in direct care settings and create a professional support system
6. Describe and apply the standards of professional conduct and ethics, including the appropriate use of social media, privacy, and maintaining boundaries in relationships with students.
Prerequisites:
A recommended placement into
READ 0200 or
ESOL 0052 or a recommended completion of
READ 0100 or
ESOL 0042.
