Description:

In Minneapolis College's Music Therapy Associate of Science degree you will develop music literacy, learn foundational principles in music therapy, and develop skills in critical analysis, logical thinking, cultural competence, historical perspective and aesthetic judgement. In addition, you will explore the less tangible but no less important aspects of music including creativity, imagination, and emotion. This degree will provide education and training in music and beginning music therapy in preparation for transferring to a four-year institution where you can complete the music therapy degree requirements to become a board-certified music therapist.

 Music Lessons: Primary Instrument: (Select from MUSC 2501-2536).You must take a music lesson (1-2 credits) with your primary instrument each semester. This requirement may not be satisfied by taking two semesters of a 2-credit lesson with your primary instrument.

 Additional Music Lessons: (1-2 Credits) These lessons can be taken in any semester, but it is recommended that you take them in your first two semesters.

  • If your primary instrument is not Piano or Guitar, you must also take at least one semester of Guitar and one semester of Piano. (1-2 credits)
    • If your primary instrument is guitar, you must also take at least one semester of Piano. (1-2 credits)
    • If your primary instrument is Piano, you must also take at least one semester of Guitar. (1-2 credits)

 *Music Ensemble: Choose one ensemble course from the list below. Your choice of ensemble must be appropriate to the instrument you have chosen for Applied Music (your major instrument). You must take four semesters of ensembles for this degree pathway. Ideally, you should plan to continue in the same ensemble for all four semesters of the program.

 Students must successfully complete a total of 40 credits of coursework in all MnTC goal areas as follows:

 See Minnesota General Education Transfer Curriculum Competencies for the list of eligible courses. One course may meet more than one MnTC Goal Area; however, credits may only be counted once.

 MnTC Goal Area 1: Written and Oral Communication: 

 A minimum of 9 credits, which must include ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110, ENGL 1111, and a Communication Studies course (CMST)

 MnTC Goal Area 2: Critical Thinking: The completion of the full 40-credit Minnesota Transfer Curriculum or a minimum of one course designated as a MnTC 2 course.

 Satisfied by completing the full 40-credit MnTC.

 MnTC Goal Area 3: Natural Science:

A minimum of two courses in different disciplines, one course must have a traditional lab and the other course must have a traditional lab or lab-like experience.

 MnTC Goal Area 4: Mathematics/Logical Reasoning: 

 A minimum of one course totaling 3 credits

*MnTC Goal Area 5: History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences: 

 A minimum of two courses. The courses must be in two different subjects. PSYC 1110 is required. Choose one additional subject other than PSYC that meets Goal 5.

 MnTC Goal Area 6: Humanities and the Fine Arts: 

 A minimum of two courses. The courses must be in two different subjects. MUSC 1070 satisfies one of the required subjects. Choose one additional subject other than MUSC that meets Goal 6.

 2 credits of ensemble are applied to completion of the 40 required credits for the MnTC

 The number of elective credits will vary depending on the number of MnTC and required coursework credits a student takes.

MnTC Requirements: 40 Credits

Students must successfully complete a total of 40 credits of coursework in all MnTC goal areas. One course may meet more than one MnTC Goal Area; however, credits may only be counted once.

MnTC Goal Area 4: Choose any MnTC Goal Area 4 MATH course. Students planning to transfer to Augsburg's Music Therapy B.S. degree should take MATH 1110: College Algebra.

MnTC Goal Area 5: PSCY 1110 satisfies one of the required subjects. Choose one additional subject other than PSYC that meets goal 5. Students who are planning to transfer to Augsburg’s Musical Therapy B.S degree, are encouraged to also take PSYC 2240: Lifespan Development.

MnTC Goal Area 6: MUSC 1070 satisfies one of the required subjects. Choose one additional subject other than MUSC that meets goal 6.

All students pursuing this award should work closely with their advisor and consult with the intended transfer institution to ensure proper selection of required program courses, if applicable program electives, required Minnesota Transfer Curriculum courses, and MnTC electives. You are expected to meet with your advisor on a regular basis to ensure courses are taken in an order that will lead to efficient and successful completion of the required coursework
