Applied Shop Mathematics and Measuring Devices (WELD 1000)

Description: This course covers math commonly used in metal fabrication industries. Problem-solving skills will be developed through classroom exercises related to work done on the job. Use of various measuring devices will also be covered.

Topical Outline:
1. Basic mathematics (i.e. whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratio, proportion and percent)
2. Applied geometry and trigonometry
3. Bill of materials formulation
4. Measuring instrument applications

Learning Outcomes:
1. Perform basic operations with whole numbers, fractions and decimals
2. Utilize applied geometry and trigonometry
3. Understand English and Metric systems of measurement
4. Understand ratio, proportion and percent
5. Estimate and produce documents for material and consumable usage
6. Read, understand and utilize tape measures, squares, calipers and micrometers

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
