Description:
This algebra-based statistics course covers the basics of descriptive and inferential statistics that introduce the fundamental concepts involved in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. You will learn the interpretation and evaluation of surveys, experiments, and statistical reports encountered in daily life. You will explore graphs, measures of central tendency and variation, probability, probability distributions (continuous and discrete), normal distribution, sampling distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing for one and two population means and proportions, chi-square, linear regression, and correlation. Additional topics may include t, or Poisson, or Binomial distribution.
Topical Outline:
1. Descriptive statistics
2. Inferential statistics through hypothesis testing using a normal and/or chi-squared distribution.
3. Graphical displays for different data types
4. Basic probability including expected value

1. Create a graphical display for a given data set
2. Calculate descriptive statistics based on data types
3. Solve basic probability problems
4. Find confidence intervals for means or proportions
5. Apply the methods of hypothesis testing
6. Critically evaluate a statistical study
Prerequisites:
Placement into
MATH 0080, or successful completion of
MATH 0075, or completion of
MATH 0070 or
MATH 0077 with a grade of A or B.
