Residential Construction Topics (ARCH 1020)

Description:
This course will introduce you to the technology needed to assemble a residential construction document package. Construction materials such as windows, wood, concrete, roofing, and steel will be analyzed. Emphasis will be given to incorporating construction products into buildings that students are preparing in lab assignments (
ARCH 1000).
Topical Outline:
1. Components, materials and construction methods common in residential construction
2. Typical areas of particular concern including air infiltration, waterproofing, flashing and connections/joints
3. Research and evaluation of project-appropriate materials and systems such as: structural systems, roofing and exterior wall assemblies, door and window products and installation, and mechanical systems
4. Residential building code application and interpretation
Learning Outcomes:
1. Define and detail the use of standard residential construction materials
2. Determine (through detailing) the proper assembly of residential construction materials
3. Select the appropriate application (by developing construction drawings) of products from windows and concrete to shingles and wood framing
4. Design and draft details using materials researched in class
5. Design code-compliant residential details, assemblies or spaces
