Working With Youth (HSER 1110)

Description: This course focuses on the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to work effectively with youth. You will learn about basic human behavior related to youth, youth leadership, basic methods of counseling and youth advocacy with an emphasis on individual values in working with youth.

Topical Outline:
1. Development and life task and obstacles to health development of youth
2. Legal and ethical issues; rights of Youth
3. Parenting models; communicating effectively with youth, models of discipline (role play)
4. Self-care in youth workers

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand theories of human development as it relates to youth development and developmental challenges
2. Identify effective skills sets and approaches that enhance youth workers effectiveness
3. Recognize own youth experiences and how it could impact youth work
4. Asses own skills, attitudes, and motives in becoming an effective youth worker

Prerequisites:  HSER 1001 or Instructor Approval
