Multicultural Aspects of Human Services (HSER 1002)

Description: This course focuses on the knowledge, skills and attitudes that human service students need in order to work effectively in culturally diverse communities. You will also get an overview of the dynamics of privilege and discrimination as they affect human services. Using the diversity represented in the class, you will explore your own and each other's cultural identities, values, attitudes, and behaviors. You will learn how to assess the impact of cultural differences in human service situations and how to adjust communication, goals, and services to meet the needs of people with whom you work. Must be taken for a letter grade of A - F.

Topical Outline:
1. Concepts of Multicultural Aspects (e.g. ableism, ageism, racism)
2. Cultural differences and working with diverse populations
3. Effective communication skills and learning about one's own cultural identity

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understanding and explain levels of cultural competency (e.g. individual and Institutional)
2. Understand and apply major concepts of multiculturalism
3. Develop increased understanding of and interest in learning about their own and others cultural identity
4. Adapt effective communication skills to accommodate cultural differences

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
