Description:

Minneapolis College's Education Program, the only two-year pre-professional teacher program in Minneapolis, prepares you to transform society through innovative teaching methods. Experienced instructors help you research and develop culturally relevant teaching methods for diverse school environments and prepare you to see urban schools as places of possibility for a more equitable and just society. The A.A.S. degree in Education prepares you to work as an educational support professional. In addition, this degree is for students who plan to transfer to a four-year university and seek to be a licensed teacher.

The A.A.S. in Education Foundations requires completion of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum: 40 Credits: Students must successfully complete a total of 40 credits of coursework in all MnTC goal areas as follows:

Requirement

 MnTC Goal Area 1: Written and Oral Communication

 A minimum of 9 credits, which must include ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110, ENGL 1111, as well as an eligible communication Studies (CMST) course.  CMST 1005 Public Speaking is recommended

 MnTC Goal Area 2: Critical Thinking

 The completion of the full 40-credit Minnesota Transfer Curriculum or a minimum of one course designated as a MnTC 2 course.

 MnTC Goal Area 3: Natural Science

 MnTC Goal Area 3: A minimum of two courses in different disciplines, one course must have a traditional lab and the other course must have a traditional lab –or- lab-like experience.

 BIOL 1100: Introduction to Biology and GEOL 1100 Physical Geology are recommended

 MnTC Goal Area 4: Mathematics/Logical Reasoning

 A minimum of one course totaling 3 credits

 MATH 1001 Math for Liberal Arts is recommended

 MnTC Goal Area 5:

 A minimum of two courses. The courses must be in two different subjects.

 AMIS 1000 or GEOG 1101 or SOCI 1105 or PSYC 2350 are recommended

 MnTC Goal Area 6:

 A minimum of two courses. The courses must be in two different subjects.

 AMST 1132 Ethnic America or PHIL 1171 or ARTS 1121 or MUSC 1060 or THTR 1131 are recommended

All students pursuing this award should work closely with their advisor and consult with the intended transfer institution to ensure proper selection of required program courses, if applicable program electives, required Minnesota Transfer Curriculum courses, and MnTC electives. You are expected to meet with your advisor on a regular basis to ensure courses are taken in an order that will lead to efficient and successful completion of the required coursework. Your advisor will assist you in choosing courses that will help you progress toward successful completion of your declared major.
