Description:
This certificate prepares students for entry-level work in a healthcare setting sterilizing instruments and working with medical and surgical equipment and supplies. The program course builds upon knowledge learned in the Healthcare Core Curriculum. Foundational anatomy and physiology and basic principles of microbiology will be presented. Course competencies include decontamination, preparation and packaging for sterilization, sterilization process, and sterile storage. Basic surgical instrumentation and medical terminology that is necessary for this area of employment in the healthcare setting will also be presented. The lab will include campus and hospital-based practice settings. Through this practicum experience, you will become familiar with the sterile processing and distribution services of a hospital.
Because this program requires internship in a hospital setting, you must pass a background check and provide proof of immunity status prior to placement into a healthcare setting.
Completion of the Sterile Procerssing and Distribution program at Minneapolis College prepares you to take the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRST) and the Surgical Instrument Specialist (CIS) certification exams.

*CSIP 1000 and CSIP 1002 are offered during the same semester. CSIP 1000 is a 9 week course that ends approximately 1 week prior to the start of CSIP 1002. Students can continue with the internship course only upon successful completion of CSIP 1000.
Students who completed NAHA 1819 in or after 2009, may petition to waive a total of three credits from the courses listed below:
HCCC 1010 (0.5cr), HCCC 1020 (1 cr), HCCC 1050 (0.5 cr), HCCC 1060 (0.5 cr) and HCCC 1070 (0.5 cr).
The Central Services Program requires:
- Grades of “C” (2.0) or above in the CSIP theory course and in HCCC 1100;
- Pass (P) grades in the CSIP clinical internship course; and
- Passing of a criminal background check prior to internship placement.
- The College cannot guarantee placement in internships for students who do not have a clear criminal background check.

All students pursuing this award should work closely with their advisor to ensure proper selection of required program courses, if applicable program electives, required Minnesota Transfer Curriculum courses, and MnTC electives. You are expected to meet with your advisor on a regular basis to ensure courses are taken in an order that will lead to efficient and successful completion of the required coursework.
