Description:

The Addiction Counseling Program will teach you the special counseling and interpersonal skills you need to work with individuals troubled by alcohol and drug abuse. Minneapolis College's program, the largest in the state, is taught by faculty with decades of clinical experience. You will learn how to counsel individuals as well as groups, highlighting different techniques and emphasizing the importance of interpersonal and cross-cultural communications. During the program you will receive extensive hands-on training through one of the many internships available at alcohol- and drug-specific agencies.

*NOTE: As of July 1, 2008, minimum qualifications for licensure have changed. Bachelor’s degrees in any field and Minneapolis College diploma requirements will be required for permit licensure. An associate degree in Addiction Counseling will allow graduates to apply for a temporary permit to work in the field for no more than five years until a bachelor’s degree is obtained.

General Education Courses (6 Credits):

To complete the Addiction Counseling Diploma, students are required to successfully complete six credits of General Education coursework. You can request transfer of advanced degree General Education courses to satisfy these credits. This coursework must be selected from at least two of the MnTC Goal Areas. A minimum of three credits must be completed from MnTC Goal Area 1.

The Addiction Counseling Program also requires:

  • Grades of “C” (2.0) or above in all COUN theory courses
  • Pass (P) grades in the in the practicum courses
  • Passing of a criminal background check prior to being placed in a COUN internship.

All students pursuing this award should work closely with their advisor to ensure proper selection of required program courses, if applicable program electives, required Minnesota Transfer Curriculum courses, and MnTC electives. You are expected to meet with your advisor on a regular basis to ensure courses are taken in an order that will lead to efficient and successful completion of the required coursework.
