Theater in the Twin Cities (THTR 1150)

Description: This course is designed to help you develop an appreciation and understanding of the role of live theater in this community. We will study the history of various types of theaters from large to small (our core theaters), and their role in the arts economy in the Twin Cities, as well as in the country and the world. We will meet theater artists from each of the core theaters, investigate their mission statements to understand the range and topography of theater in this community. You will attend three to four plays at Twin Cities area theaters, and analyze at least two of these performances in written play reviews. You will also create an individual project tailored to your own interests in theater.

Topical Outline:
1. History of various types of theaters and the arts economy
2. Role of live theater in the community, the country, and the world
3. Theatre makers: actors, directors, playwrights
4. Analysis of performance from a critical perspective
5. Technical theatre makers: lighting, sound, stagecraft

Learning Outcomes:
1. Articulate the various types of theaters and the arts economy
2. Recognize the relationship of theatres in the Twin Cities to the greater community
3. Identify the Theatre makers: actors, directors, playwrights, lighting, sound, stagecraft
4. Articulate connections between community, educational, profit and non-profit theatres in the Twin Cities
5. Articulate written and oral responses to plays and performances

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
