Physics in Your Life (PHYS 1000)

Total Credits: 4
Lecture Credits: 3
Lab Credits: 1

Description: Physics is the study of matter, energy, force, motion, and the interrelationships among them. The fundamental principles of physics provide the basis upon which much of the modern world operates. This course will cover these basic principles of physics with an emphasis on conceptual understanding and application. You will acquire an appreciation of the nature of physics as a human endeavor, gain a historical perspective of this field, and apply the fundamental concepts and principles of physics toward understanding natural processes.

Topical Outline:
1. Mechanics
2. Properties of Matter
3. Heat
4. Electricity and Magnetism
5. Light

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand physics as a human endeavor, including the nature of scientific knowledge and the historical perspective
2. Apply the fundamental concepts and principles of physics concerning properties of and changes in matter; position, motion, and force; light, heat, electricity, and magnetism; and kinds of and ways to transfer energy
3. Design and conduct scientific investigation of physics phenomena
4. Use appropriate scientific tools and equipment, including mathematics, in scientific inquiry, problem-solving, and communication

Prerequisites:  Background in mathematics is recommended, but not required.
