Biology Undergraduate Research Experience (BIOL 2910)

Internship/Practicum Credits: 2 - 4

Description: This course will provide students opportunities to carry out biology undergraduate research and earn academic credit. You must secure and document a research opportunity or internship before registering for this course. You will learn to work safely in a laboratory or field setting, carry out protocols with accuracy and precision, and use good data documentation practices. You will analyze and report your results, for example, via a poster or written report. Must be taken A-F.

1. Background and significance of research project
2. Lab safety and expectations for undergraduate research
3. Laboratory or field work methods and equipment use
4. Troubleshooting and quality control
5. Data collection and documentation
6. Data analysis and scientific communication

Learning Outcomes:
1. Develop and sign a contract with the instructor including research topic, time commitment, and expectation for reporting results.
2. Demonstrate understanding of the research topic, including broader significance, through framing of experimental question, hypothesis, and analysis of results.
3. Use best practices for lab and field work safety.
4. Conduct procedures and use lab equipment correctly and with attention to detail.
5. Maintain clear and complete records of experimental methods and results.
6. Analyze and report results using professional scientific communication standards.

Prerequisites:  BIOL 2200 and Instructor Permission
