Yoga: The Science of the Mind (HLTH 2220)

Description: This Yoga Alliance approved course provides an overview of yoga history, theory (philosophical and psychological), ethics and contemplative practices. You will learn the relationship between yoga’s history, theory, ethics and its contemplative practices such as pranayama (breath control), chanting, and meditation. Using yoga’s understanding of the mind, you will apply and reflect on a variety of ethical and contemplative practices.

Topical Outline:
1. Yoga history, key terms and definitions
2. Yoga's Anatomy of the Mind
3. Reading critiquing and discussing sacred texts such as The Yoga Sutras, The Vijnana Bhairava, The Bhagavad Gita, The Upanishads, etc.
4. Bhakti, Jnana, Karma and Raja Yoga pathways
5. Engage in and peer-teach contemplative practices such as: pranayama techniques, pratayahara, concentration, meditation and Samadhi, chants or mantras, mudra, yoga nidra, puja, etc.
6. Relationship of yoga ethics to practice and teaching

Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze personal attitudes and belief systems about their body, mind and spirit, and their role in the context of the community.
2. Assess one's current state of health through all the dimensions of Wellness (physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, occupational and environmental) and apply coping strategies to balance one's health now and gain resiliency for the future.
3. Analyze the relationship between yoga ethics and practice and teaching.
4. Critique yoga's anatomy and understanding of the mind.

Prerequisites:  Admission to the Yoga Teacher Training Program and Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of ENGL 0900 or ENGA 0900
