The Art of Teaching Yoga (HLTH 2000)

Description: This Yoga Alliance approved course is for aspiring yoga teachers and provides the tools and applications to design and teach yoga classes everyone can participate in. Using trauma informed principles, you will learn methodologies for creating equitable spaces and verbal cues. You will learn modifications for practices for a variety of mind-body presentations and apply them in a one-on-one client experience.

Topical Outline:
1. Proper sequencing (such as vinyasa krama) and scaffolding of practices
2. Trauma informed principles and methodologies
3. Building rapport, investigation, and lesson planning
4. Transtheoretical model of behavior change and SMART goal setting
5. Yoga practice modifications for a variety of populations, to be based on client need
6. Yoga teacher scope of practice, code of conduct, and business tools

Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze personal attitudes and belief systems about their body, mind and spirit, and their role in the context of the community.
2. Design and implement behavior modification plans that strive for excellence in wellness through healthy behaviors and boundaries and positive decision making.
3. Demonstrate proper performance of physical skills through body mechanics and personal and community safety techniques.
4. Critique their own use of the teaching principles and methods implemented during their client-teacher interactions.

Prerequisites:  Admission to the Yoga Teacher Training Program and Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of ENGL 0900 or ENGA 0900
