Mental Health First Aid (HLTH 1155)

Description: In this course, you will learn how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. Certification will be earned upon successful completion of the course requirements. Must be taken Pass/No Credit.

1. The Mental Health First Aider
2. Early signs and symptoms of common mental health illnesses
3. Worsening signs and symptoms of common mental health illnesses
4. Mental health crisis situations and situations that may become a crisis
5. National and local mental health resources
6. Self-care for the Mental Health First Aider

Learning Outcomes:
1. Recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.
2. Use a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional help.
3. Interpret the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities.
4. Apply knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem treat and manage the problem and achieve recovery.

Prerequisites:  Students must be 18 years or older per Mental Health First Aid requirements. Requires instructor permission, please contact the instructor.
