Effects of Drugs on Children and Adolescent Health (HLTH 2255)

Description: This course takes a unique approach to learning the effects of drugs on children and adolescents from a physical, social, emotional, and mental health perspective. You will evaluate addiction theories; gain an understanding of basic licit and illicit drug pharmacology; learn about family dynamics and the role of school and the community in the lives of this population; and develop awareness around the best practices for drug education, interventions and treatments for children and adolescents. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Science of addiction and overview of drug pharmacology and terminology focused on child and adolescent licit and illicit drug use
2. Effects of drugs on child and adolescent social, physical, emotional and mental development and behaviors
3. Effects of drugs on child and adolescent life and learning
4. Family, school and community systems, dynamics and concerns
5. Child and adolescent prevention, drug education, intervention, treatments and community resources

Learning Outcomes:
1. Evaluate addiction theories, drug education programs and treatment programs
2. Articulate your position on a public action to a group-interest topic as it relates to child and adolescent health
3. Demonstrate an ability to cope with health-related topics now and in the future
4. Understand the influence of use and misuse of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and other chemicals on student life and learning
5. Identify how factors in a student's environment outside of school, including health and economic conditions, may influence student life and learning

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
