Introduction to Community Health (HLTH 1108)

Description: This course examines the role of your community on your health. Using the public health model, you will assess the impact of where you eat, work and play has on your health. Exploring topics such as maternal and child/adolescent health, mental health, drug use, communicable diseases, violence and more you will identify how the health of your community affects your own wellness and build social responsibility around the premise that we are each accountable for the health of the community. This course does not satisfy requirements for the Community Health Worker Program.

Topical Outline:
1. Social determinants of health
2. Overview of Public Health systems including Healthy People initiatives
3. Community organizing and health promotion
4. Epidemiology
5. Community health topics including maternal and child/adolescent health, mental health, drug use, communicable disease and violence
6. Environmental health topics including the air we breathe, the water we use, the food we eat, where we live and the places we work

Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze the social determinants of health and the public health system
2. Examine health promotion in one's community
3. Assess the importance of health-related conditions of a community by using key epidemiological principles
4. Examine ways to cope with health-related topics now and in the future by assessing community resources related to the topics of community health

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
