Introduction to Meditation and Mindfulness (HLTH 1505)

Description: You will develop an understanding of the cultural and historical background of meditation in major world religions. You will examine current research on meditation, mindfulness, and health. You will develop your ability to enter a calm and centered state of awareness through working with the body, the breath, and the mind.

Topical Outline:
1. Meditative practice and theory in Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Shamanism, and Yoga
2. Recent scientific work on the mind-body connection
3. Personal mind-body integration through meditation and mindfulness practice

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate understanding of recent scientific research on the mind-body connection
2. Apply the meditative theory and practice in Buddhism, Hinduism, shamanism and yoga
3. Describe the personal experience of mind-body integration through meditation and mindfulness practices
4. Establish a meditation practice

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
