Introduction to Public Policy (PSCI 1200)

Description: This course will explore the public policy-making process at the local, state and national levels. You will examine key public policy models and methods and learn how individuals and groups become involved in the policy-making process. You will also learn practical techniques for involving yourself and communities in the design, implementation, and assessment of public policies. You will examine public policies that affect economically disadvantaged communities, communities of color, women and young people.

Topical Outline:
1. The study of public policy (definitions; categories of public policies; approaches to its study)
2. Policy-making contexts (national, state, local)
3. Public policy formation
4. Administrative politics and budgeting
5. Public policy impact, evaluation, and change
6. Practical techniques to involve communities in the design, implementation and assessment of public policies

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify major public policy categories and approaches to its study
2. Research and analyze the formation, implementation and evolution of public policies
3. Evaluate public policies and their impact
4. Demonstrate practical techniques for involving oneself and communities in the design, implementation and assessment of public policies

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
