Relaxation Techniques (PHED 1132)

Description: This course is designed for the student interested in developing body awareness and relaxation techniques. It includes learning techniques to reduce distress and quiet the body, stretches for relaxing, diaphragmatic breathing, progressive relaxation, massage, and various other techniques. It also emphasizes decisions and choices that need to be made for acquiring good body awareness, all done within a psychophysical education approach. Must be taken Pass/Fail.

Topical Outline:
1. Wellness concept and the components for optimal well-being
2. Mindfulness and the breathing, posture and additional exercises that support and enhance well-being
3. Demonstration and participation in a variety of practices; progressive relaxation, visualization, bio-feedback, shiatsu massage, differential relaxation, imagery, walking meditation, reflexology and Tia Chi
4. Reflection as a practice in mindfulness

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate and participate in various relaxation techniques
2. Develop an understanding of mindful practice using a variety of techniques to accomplish
3. Examine personal beliefs and how mindful practice can lead to a less stressful and more harmonious life style
4. Create the basis for lifetime participation in mindful practice in addition to creating an awareness of community resources available
