Introduction to English for ESOL Educators (EDUC 2300)

Description: This course is designed for unlicensed educators (such as paraprofessionals and tutors) working with ESOL populations and reviews the grammatical structure and sound system of English as required for work with English language learners. You will identify the grammatical structures and aspects of pronunciation in English that cause problems for English language learners. You will also develop strategies and techniques for teaching and tutoring problematic English grammatical structures and aspects of pronunciation. This course can be taken concurrently with EDUC 1200 or EDUC 1400.

4. Current theories of language teaching

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate an awareness of the English sound system, English word formation rules; factors affecting English word, sentence and dialogue meaning and basic English grammar
2. Demonstrate an awareness of why and how languages change
3. Demonstrate an understanding of how second (and third, etc.) languages are acquired and the factors that affect subsequent language acquisition
4. Demonstrate an awareness of the difference between first and second language acquisition
5. Demonstrate an awareness of past and current methods of language teaching
6. Describe language acquisition theories and implications, the nature and developmental stages of language acquisition, and individual differences in language acquisition

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
