Description:
This course prepares students interested in working with children and youth who have special needs. You will acquire and build skills to interact and work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and alternative-service providers in school and other settings. Must be taken A-F.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify traditional mainstreaming and alternative settings models for delivery of services to learners with exceptional needs
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the various services afforded to students with special needs
3. Document observations, exchanges, informal assessments, tasks completed and behavior exhibited both verbally and in writing
4. Discuss the role of each IEP team member and effectively describe the elements of a functioning IEP team
5. Explain how to communicate and collaborate with students with special needs, families, school personnel and alternative service providers to effectively work as a special education educator in the classroom
6. Demonstrate a positive and culturally competent approach for exceptional learners and their families. Advocate for children and youth with special needs
