Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders (EDUC 2270)

Description: This course prepares students interested in working with children and youth who have learning disabilities and behavior disorders. You will learn the identifiable characteristics of and examine the trends and issues related to these children and youth. You will analyze the effects of dysfunctional behavior on learning, and identify major social, academic, and behavioral characteristics of students with a learning disability and/or a behavior disorder. Must be taken A-F.

2. Definitions, Causes, and Characteristics of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders
3. Reading and Written Language Challenges
4. Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors
5. Social Skills and Interpersonal Relationships
6. Educational Approaches and Placements

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics and potential needs of students with specific learning disabilities
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics and potential needs of students with emotional or behavioral disorders
3. Identify the legal definition(s), identifying characteristics and causes of specific learning disabilities and emotional or behavioral disorders
4. Differentiate between internalizing and externalizing behaviors and how each affects the ability to learn in the current educational paradigm
5. Compare the differences between attention difficulties, hyperactivity, and behavior problems and understand the issues each present
6. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of various educational placements available for students with specific learning disabilities and students with emotional or behavioral disorders

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
