Introduction to Culturally Responsive Classroom Guidance (EDUC 1235)

Description: This course is an introduction to different models of guidance and classroom management that demonstrate cultural competence and promote student resiliency, independence and achievement. You will examine your own beliefs about appropriate guidance and develop a cohesive guidance approach with strategies, resources, and pro-social lesson plans for the classroom. You will learn to work with families in ways that engage and involve them in culturally appropriate ways. Throughout the course, you will examine your own biases and how those biases affect classroom guidance and culture. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Personal belief system about guidance, power dynamics and role of teacher
2. Management theories for children and youth that reflect cultural competence and respect for all learners
3. Approaches to family engagement & involvement
4. Deconstructing personal, interpersonal and structural biases as they relate to guidance, management and discipline in classrooms and schools
5. Positive strategies for addressing mistaken behaviors in classrooms and fostering resiliency
6. Methods and materials for teaching pro-social skills to children and youth, including anti-bullying approaches

Learning Outcomes:
1. Recognize how personal management beliefs and assumptions affect practice and analyze personal, interpersonal and structural biases as they relate to guidance, management and discipline in classroom and schools
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between learning, behavior, and student resistance
3. Evaluate theories of guidance for cultural appropriateness for all different learners and contexts
4. Examine methods and strategies for authentic family engagement that recognizes cultural and community assets
5. Model nonverbal and verbal communication strategies that are culturally appropriate and contribute to positive classroom culture
6. Identify strategies, resources and pro-social lesson seeds that align with personally identified management theory and demonstrate cultural competence, foster student independence, resiliency, and achievement
