Infant-Toddler Development and Learning Experiences (ECED 1540)

Description: This course provides an overview of infant/toddler theory and development in home- or center-based settings. You will integrate knowledge of developmental needs, developmentally appropriate environments, effective care giving and teaching strategies and observation methods. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Prenatal Development, Childbirth, the Newborn and Infant Toddler Temperament
2. Observing and Recording Infant Toddler Development
3. Family, Cultural, and Societal Influences on Infant and Toddler Development
4. Typical and Individual Development of Infants and Toddlers in all domains
5. Care giving Routines and Transitions
6. Equipment and materials to support learning through play

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify typical and individual development in prenatal, infant, and toddler age groups in all domains
2. Point out effects of parental involvement, media, supporting home language, and culturally relevant interactions on the development of infants and toddlers
3. Design and Evaluate developmentally appropriate practices for transitions and routines, stress reduction in young children, and play based learning experiences to support development in all domains
4. Discuss attachment theory, temperament, personality types and impact of health factors and stress on the development of infants and toddlers
5. Give examples of responsive caregiving strategies, levels of play in learning, and classrooms planned with developmentally appropriate materials
6. Document infant and toddler development in all domains through the use of observation tools

Prerequisites:  A recommended placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or a recommended completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042.
