Learning Environments and Curriculum (ECED 1545)

Description: This course presents an overview of knowledge and skills related to curriculum and environments for young children. You will implement the principles of developmentally appropriate practice in writing learning objectives and assessments for content areas such as motor development, language and literacy, social and emotional, sensory, process art, music, math, blocks, and science. You will also consider how to plan environments and select materials that provide play experiences that support development, independence, and exploration through sequential and integrated learning. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Overview of the infant, toddler preschool and school-age development
2. Overview of developmentally appropriate practices for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children
3. Overview of materials and equipment designed to foster the development of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children
4. Overview of the following developmental areas and the learning experiences which will support extend the developmental level of children in all domains

Learning Outcomes:
1. Plan an environment that meets licensing requirements
2. Select appropriate materials to promote children’s cultural and home experiences, interests and development
3. Plan daily schedules and routines
4. Explore developmentally appropriate curriculum resources
5. Use Minnesota early indicators of progress to write learning objectives and assessments
6. Examine teacher’s role in play and develop skills to extend children’s play to higher levels

Prerequisites:  ECED 1215 or Instructor Approval
