Description:
This course will provide knowledge in patient management, chairside assisting and the concepts of four-handed dentistry. You will focus on medical/dental histories, vital signs, medical and dental emergencies, drug classifications, and commonly used drugs in dentistry. You will have the opportunity to demonstrate the appropriate armamentarium for dental procedures, seating positions, instrument transfer and operator setup for full utilization of a chairside assistant. Must be taken A-F.
Topical Outline:
1. Medical/dental histories, vital signs, medical and dental emergencies
2. Safety issues and biohazards within a dental office
3. Drug classifications and commonly used drugs in dentistry
4. Appropriate armamentarium for dental procedures to include: rotary instruments, accessories, and procedural instruments and their maintenance
5. Seating positions of the operator, assistant and patient
6. Instrument transfer using four/six-handed techniques
Learning Outcomes:
1. Determine and record vital signs to aid in assessing medical concerns that could alter treatment and/or prevent a medical emergency situation
2. Identify safety precautions and biohazards as they apply to dental materials, equipment, and in the dental office
3. Identify pharmacological agents and their uses
4. Identify operative dentistry, the various procedures, and appropriate tray-sets for the variety of treatment planned
5. Identify proper instrument grasps and appropriate seating of the operator, dental assistant and the patient
6. Demonstrate proper seating, isolation, oral evacuation and instrument transfer

Acceptance into the Dental Assistant program; Placement into

ESOL 0052 or completion of
