Introduction to Computers (CSCI 1100)

Description: This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of computer concepts and applications to show how computers are used in the home, business and organizations. Computer topics covered include essential concepts of computers, the Internet, software basics, multimedia, computer files and storage, computer architecture, ethics, and current trends. You will use email and the Internet and gain hands-on experience using computer applications for word processing, spreadsheets, file organization, databases, and presentation graphics in the Microsoft Windows environment using Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

1. Computers and current computer hardware devices
2. Current productivity software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases
3. Integrate current productivity software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, databases)
4. System software, utility programs, file management storage and retrieval
5. Other programs, applications, Internet resources and references
6. Networks, computer security, ethics and privacy while navigating the Internet's Web resources

Learning Outcomes:
1. Use and correctly identify appropriate computer technology
2. Demonstrate use of current applications to produce documents for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and a database at a basic skill level
3. Demonstrate ability to integrate productivity software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, database) for academic and personal use
4. Demonstrate ability to securely navigate the Internet to locate current resources and references
5. Use system software, utilities, and file management correctly

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052. Keyboarding skills recommended.
