Architect's Professional Practice (ARCH 1530)

Description: This course presents the contracts and documents which are used in the architectural profession. Students will examine American Institute of Architects (AIA) documents ranging from Change Orders to the AIA General Conditions. The course will review the importance of conducting an architectural practice in a business-like way.

Topical Outline:
1. AIA documents used in contracts, bidding and construction administration
2. Parties involved in the process and their responsibilities
3. General office practice including time sheets, billing and communicating with the team
4. Resumes, portfolios and interviewing skills

Learning Outcomes:
1. Define the phases of construction (schematic design, design development, etc.)
2. Understand and use AIA documents
3. Explain the role of each party in the design and construction process and the liability assigned to each
4. Write a resume and cover letter template
5. Create a hardcopy and electronic portfolio
6. Hone interviewing skills
