Building Codes/Zoning/Specifications (ARCH 1520)

Description: This course is a study of standards and codes used to design buildings and sites. These regulations govern the materials and construction of building design and are critical to ensuring public safety. You will review zoning ordinances and their relationship to how communities plan for comfort, safety, and growth. Investigation of product specifications and how it impacts project design will also be included.

2. Zoning ordinances, their application and application
3. Purpose of codes, how they are administrated and how they impact building design
4. Current building code requirements
5. Current accessibility code requirements

Learning Outcomes:
1. Locate project details and materials using the industry-standard CSI format
2. Understand the importance of coordination between specifications and construction documents
3. Locate and apply appropriate zoning requirements for a given site
4. Determine a building’s construction type, occupancy type and occupancy count
5. Calculate plumbing requirements and design a code compliant restroom
6. Determine code –compliant exiting

Prerequisites:  Placement into MATH 0070
