Mechanical and Electrical Systems (ARCH 1510)

Total Credits: 3
Lecture Credits: 3

Description: This course provides an overview of the selection criteria and the design process for heating, ventilating and air conditioning, electrical systems, water supply and sanitation, lighting, and elevator systems. The interrelationship of architecture and the engineering functions is explored.

Topical Outline:
1. Basic thermal concepts and building science
2. Coordination and the integration of engineering disciplines with architecture
3. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
4. Electrical components and lighting
5. Water systems including supply, drainage and sprinklers
6. Elevators

Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe basic thermal processes and how they affect cold climate buildings
2. Perform heat loss calculations for building assemblies
3. Identify predominant coordination factors between the different systems in a building
4. Describe HVAC system components
5. Describe electrical system components and design a device and lighting layout for a project
6. Describe water supply and drainage system components

Prerequisites:  Placement into MATH 0070
