Description:
In this elective course, you will learn and apply skills and competencies for screening, assessing and counseling persons with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders described in SAMHSA TIP 42 "Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with Co-Occurring Disorders." You will learn the most contemporary evidence-based treatments, methods, and skills for working with multidisciplinary behavioral health teams. Must be taken A-F.
Topical Outline:
1. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and Minnesota Rule 25 criteria for co-occurring disorders
2. TIP 42 and IDDT Models for effective treatment of co-occurring disorders
3. Best practices in counseling diverse populations with co-occurring disorders. Including: Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness and Wellness, Crisis Intervention
4. Current tools for screening for co-occurring disorders
Learning Outcomes:
1. Research, understand and describe evidence based co-occurring treatment models and methods
2. Learn and practice using screening and assessment instruments designed for co-occurring disorders
3. Explore, learn and examine criteria for assessing substance use and mental health disorders
4. Learn, practice and describe the use of Motivational interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral and other evidence-based therapies and techniques used in the treatment of co-occurring disorders
