Multicultural Counseling Skills (COUN 2540)

Description: In this course, you will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that alcohol- and drug-abuse counselors need in order to work effectively with culturally diverse client populations. You will focus on psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral theories and techniques, as well as on motivational interviewing and family counseling within a multicultural context. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Major Counseling Theories including: Person Centered, Psychoanalysis, Cognitive Behavioral, Family therapy
2. Cultural Aspects of Addiction Counseling including: epidemiology and theories of cultural competence
3. 16 hours of basic motivational interviewing skills
4. Counseling Skills and Techniques
5. Multicultural counseling skills

1. Perform micro counseling skills
2. Increase cultural awareness
3. Understand major counseling theories
4. Understanding personal characteristics of counseling: culture, values and ethics
5. Apply counseling skills and techniques in a culturally competent manner

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
