Description:
In this course, you will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that alcohol- and drug-abuse counselors need in order to work effectively with culturally diverse client populations. You will focus on psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral theories and techniques, as well as on motivational interviewing and family counseling within a multicultural context. Must be taken A-F.
Topical Outline:
1. Major Counseling Theories including: Person Centered, Psychoanalysis, Cognitive Behavioral, Family therapy
2. Cultural Aspects of Addiction Counseling including: epidemiology and theories of cultural competence
3. 16 hours of basic motivational interviewing skills
4. Counseling Skills and Techniques
5. Multicultural counseling skills
