Pharmacy Technician Internship (PHRM 1100)

Description: This course is an off-campus, experiential-learning component for the Pharmacy Technician program. You will be supervised by a pharmacist in the field and evaluated by instructors from the Pharmacy Technician program. As an intern, you will apply and enhance your knowledge and skills learned in the program. This internship requires 90 hours of on-site training. The course requires the instructor's permission to register.

Topical Outline:
1. Knowledge and skill required as a retail pharmacy technician
2. Pharmacy technician's role in assisting the pharmacist
3. Pharmacy technician's ethical and professional behavior
4. Medication use review, department management and monitoring the practice site and/or service area for compliance with federal, state and local laws, regulations and professional standards
5. Requirements of collecting payment and/or initiating billing for pharmacy services and goods
6. Employment preparation as a pharmacy technician and successful completion of the certification exam

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required as a retail pharmacy technician under the supervision of a pharmacist as required by the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy
2. Assist the pharmacist in collecting, organizing, and evaluating information for direct patient care
3. Demonstrate ethical conduct and professional behavior through clear communication
4. Practice receiving, screening prescription/medication orders for completeness, authenticity and prepare medication for distribution
5. Demonstrate initiating, verifying, and assisting with collection of payment or billing for the pharmacy goods and service
