Description:
This course introduces vocabulary and symbols needed for music reading and writing. You will develop skills necessary to notate and perform basic melody, harmony, and rhythm. The skills learned in this class will help further your abilities as a musician, composer, songwriter, or arranger. This is a gateway course to the fields of and careers in music education, music therapy, performance, music business, and advanced work in music theory.
Topical Outline:
1. Notation of pitch (treble and bass clefs)
2. Notation of sound and silence (notes and rests)
3. Notation of tonality and harmony (key signatures, scales, chords)
4. Reading and performing notation and rhythm
Learning Outcomes:
1. Notate and analyze sound and silence using fundamental elements found in Western tonal music.
2. Compose and perform and basic notated pieces
3. Contextualize basic music theory within historical and cultural frames.
4. Critically respond to the usage of basic music elements in composed pieces.
