Description:
This course presents an overview of the music of four major cultural groups representing Asia, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean and native North America. In this course, you will learn to explore the music of these groups to compare and contrast musical genres, as well as relate the music to each culture's values, beliefs, and sense of identity. You will accomplish this through readings, lectures and discussion both in class and on line. Audio and visual examples will be provided. You will also learn to perform songs from each group.
Topical Outline:
1. Musical Elements – the vocabulary of music
2. Perceptive listening: developing active and critical listening skills
3. Evolution of the folk, classical and popular genres and styles identified as belonging to the larger genre of World music
4. Socio-political events that shape and are shaped by the evolution of musical genres and styles
Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe musical events using appropriate terminology
2. Connect the music they experience in this course with parallel developments in art, science, and political and social movements
3. Connect the music and the cultures they experience in this course with the music and cultures of the United States of which they are familiar
4. Differentiate music of different styles and genres, in terms of performance practices, context, musical elements, innovations, technological advances, and the influences of culture and history
5. Communicate their perceptions and responses to the music and its context with others using appropriate terminology
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the elements unique to cultures studied
