Lighting 1 (PHMO 1050)

Description: This course covers basic lighting techniques used by all professional photographers in creating both still and motion imagery. You will learn the control of the five lighting elements of quality, direction, ratio, quantity and color as they relate to creating three-dimensional contrast. You will explore the application of daylight, continuous and strobe lighting in the studio and on location using light modifying devices. You must provide your own dSLR or mirrorless camera with video capability for this course. Consult with instructor for camera recommendations.

2. Metering and Exposure Methods for Still and Video
3. Three-Dimensional Contrast Control
4. Differences in Light Modifying Devices
5. Controlling Daylight, Continuous and Studio Strobe Lighting

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify light modifying devices
2. Produce photographs & video showing each of five elements of light
3. Distinguish between incident and reflective metering methods
4. Demonstrate equipment and safety procedures in a studio setting
5. Select appropriate lighting equipment for still & motion subjects

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042. PHMO Instructor Approval for Non-PHMO Majors
