Comparative Herbalism (HERB 1250)

Description: This course explores plant-based healing practices in the West and East including European, Ayurvedic Traditional Chinese, African American and Native American philosophies. You will learn comparative beliefs about the body, its relationship to the natural world, and the processes of health and disease will be studied to understand holistic healing methods.

Topical Outline:
1. Native American healing philosophies
2. Western healing philosophies including the Greek and Arabic humoral systems
3. African American healing philosophies
4. Traditional Chinese Medicine healing philosophies
5. Ayurvedic healing philosophies

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify similarities and differences between different holistic health philosophies practiced in the US
2. Compare diagnostic tools used in traditional medicine systems
3. Analyze the influences each of the different medicine systems have had on the holistic medicine practices in the US
4. Contrast the different methods of treatment utilized in different herbal medicine systems

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
