Applications of Herbal Medicine 1 (HERB 1105)

Description: In this course, you will learn how herbal medicine can support health in specific life stages. You will discuss modern health concerns, focusing on traditional and contemporary herbal treatments that positively affect health throughout life. Through lectures, case studies and research, you will identify effective strategies for using herbs safely as well as how to change dosages for the age of the individual. You will study how herbal medicine works on organs systems in the body, including the respiratory, immune and reproductive systems.

Topical Outline:
1. Herbal medicine specific for age and sex including children, female and male reproductive health, and the elderly
2. Herbal medicine treatment strategies for colds and flu, emotional issues, and reproductive health.
3. Safety and dosing strategies of herbal medicines and herb/drug interactions
4. Holistic evaluation of individual health

Learning Outcomes:
1. Develop safe herbal medicine dosing strategies for children, adults and the elderly
2. Safely use herbs with an understanding of Herb/Drug interactions and know how to assess research on the subject
3. Develop effective herbal treatment strategies for individuals.
4. Use effective communication to disseminate credible information about using herbal medicine to support positive health outcomes.

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
