Foundations of Herbal Medicine (HERB 1000)

Description: This course provides an overview of the ancient systems of medicine including Greek, Native American and African philosphies. Through comparison of various systems of medicine, you will learn how herbal medicine was developed as a part of a holistic approach to health and well-being. Beginning with the ancient systems, you will follow the historical thread to the holistic medicine movements in the United States from colonization to the current times.

Topical Outline:
1. Ancient Western European and Arabic herbal medicine
2. Early American Botanical medicine movements
3. Native American herbal medicine
4. Traditional medicine
5. African American Herbal Medicine

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify basic philosophical concepts of different traditional medicine systems used in the US including European, Arabic, Native American and African American medicine.
2. Demonstrate understanding of US history as it pertains to herbal medicine
3. Compare and contrast traditional and holistic medicine systems to modern medical practices
4. Develop an understanding of 6 different herbs based on their use through history and through different traditions

Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
