Description:
This course serves as a foundation to design by exploring basic design theory, vocabulary, principles, practices and creative problem-solving. You will learn design fundamentals both traditional and digital media, images, and relationship between typography and other visual elements while developing layouts for the new media environment.
Topical Outline:
1. Design and the design process
2. Aesthetic and its relationship and impact on design
3. Examine the traditional basic design elements and principles: point, line, plane, scale, rhythm, value, color, texture, and pattern
4. Role of typography and images and the relationship to framing, format, and hierarchy
5. Introduce the design tools that are utilized in today's design environment such as: linear vs. nonlinear design, layering, transparency, time and motion, and rules of randomness
6. Introduce modularity and working with a grid
Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand the foundations, structure, and function of design
2. Define formal elements and principles of design
3. Describe the stages and parts of a layout
4. Demonstrate critical thinking while developing concepts to be used in a design project
5. Utilize both traditional and new media concepts to solve design problems
6. Demonstrate the steps in the psychological model of the creative process
Prerequisites:
Placement into
READ 1300 or completion of
READ 0200 or
ESOL 0052. It is strongly recommended that students either place into
MATH 0070 or successfully complete MATH 0060.
