Practicum 2: Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum (ECED 2600)

Description: This course provides an opportunity for students to continue to demonstrate early-childhood teaching competencies under guided supervision in a licensed early-childhood setting, making connections between theory and practice. You will continue to practice professional behaviors as they apply to child-centered, culturally sensitive, play-oriented approaches to teaching and learning. You will demonstrate knowledge of curriculum content areas as they develop, implement, and assess curriculum that promote positive development and learning. This class includes 144 hours of fieldwork in an early childhood setting. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to Practicum requirements and to selected site
2. Observation of children at the practicum site
3. Range of developmental capabilities among children in the classroom
4. Selection, preparation, presentation and evaluation of learning experiences to foster development of the children in all domains

Learning Outcomes:
1. Document child’s development in all domains and summarize results for supervising teacher
2. Create an integrated, balanced, developmentally appropriate theme and learning experiences for young children that includes a field trip
3. Implement and evaluate an integrated, balanced, developmentally appropriate theme and learning experiences for young children that includes a field trip
4. Adapt learning experiences to meet the needs of both the group and individual students
5. Demonstrate effective communication techniques in the practicum site with children, parents, and professional staff
6. Document securing instructor approved practicum site, review of staff policy and procedure manuals at approved practicum site, and completion of all practicum goals and requirements
