Description:
This course examines the child with differing abilities in an early-childhood setting. You will integrate strategies that support diversity and anti-bias perspectives; provide inclusive programs for young children; apply legal and ethical requirements including, but not limited to ADA and IDEA; differentiate between typical and exceptional development; analyze the differing abilities of children with physical, cognitive, health/medical, communication, and/or emotional/behavioral disorders; work collaboratively with community and professional resources; utilize an individual education plan; adapt curriculum to meet the needs of children with developmental differences; and learn the importance of cultivating partnerships with families who have children with developmental differences. Must be taken A-F.
Topical Outline:
1. Exploration of teacher bias & expectations
2. Overview of legal and ethical requirements including, but not limited to ADA and IDEA
3. Differentiate between typical and exceptional development
4. Community and professional resources
5. Individual education plan/Individual Family Service Plan and curriculum adaptation
6. Partnerships with families who have children with developmental differences
Learning Outcomes:
1. Examine differing abilities based upon authentic assessments
2. Adapt activities and environment to support children’s learning style, ability level, and differing needs while building on student strengths and utilizing their errors as learning opportunities
3. Identify teaching practices that integrate individualized planning and family involvement which support children with variations in learning styles, cultural perspectives, and abilities to optimize development in all domain areas
4. Describe the unique developmental, physical, cognitive, behavioral, and social/emotional needs of students with differing abilities and diverse backgrounds
5. Identify community resources and services available to children with differing abilities and their families
6. Describe types of programs and interventions mandated by equal education legislation
