Observation and Assessment (ECED 1575)

Description: This course focuses on the appropriate use of assessment and observation strategies to document development, growth, play and learning in conjuncture with families and professionals in promoting children's success. You will explore recording strategies, rating systems, multiple assessment tools and portfolios, with a focus on increasing objectivity in observing and interpreting children's behavior, observing developmental characteristics, and increasing the awareness of normal patterns of behavior. Must be taken A-F.

1. Appropriate use of assessment and observation strategies
2. Methods of recording observations: Objectivity and different types of observation tools
3. Use of Portfolios in Early Childhood Programs
4. Increasing awareness of normal patterns of behavior
5. Ethical considerations of assessments
6. Communication strategies for working with diverse families

Learning Outcomes:
1. Organize informal and formal observation and assessment of children’s learning and development to plan and individualize curriculum and teaching practices
2. Identify observation and assessment tools used in early care and education programs
3. Utilize a variety of tools to objectively observe and record individual children's patterns of development, behavior, and preferred learning style
4. Engage children in self-assessment and use the results to identify needs and learning styles to plan appropriate programs, environments, and interactions
5. Use formative and summative program evaluation instruments to enhance and maintain comprehensive program quality for children, families, and the community
6. Use classroom observation, information about students, and research as sources for evaluating the outcomes of teaching and learning and as a basis for reflective practice
