Working with Diverse Families and Children (ECED 1505)

Description: This course examines how to work with many types of families. You will investigate the importance of family/school partnerships, study methods of effectively communicating with families, and identify community organizations and networks that support families. You will explore various classroom strategies emphasizing culturally and linguistically appropriate antibias approaches supporting all children in becoming competent members of a diverse society. Must be taken A-F.

1. Role of culture and personal values
2. Overview of family characteristics and dynamics
3. Family-teacher relationships and communication
4. Culturally responsive care and education
5. Community resources and referral
6. Social political forces on children and families

Learning Outcomes:
1. Assess own culture, personal values and bias to be sensitive to family differences and backgrounds
2. Explore systems theories and family-community relationships that support
3. Discuss how children are best understood in the context of family, culture and society and how being a part of those is crucial to development
4. Examine strategies for working with families from diverse backgrounds and how supporting relationships with families positively impacts a child’s learning
5. Identify community resources to help with professional development as well as those to share with families to support each child
6. Explain that families are the first and most important teachers of their children and as such should be steering the path for their child’s development

Prerequisites:  A recommended placement into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or a recommended completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042.
