Description:
This course will examine key components of regulations, standards, and policies that ensure physical and psychological health, safety, and nutrition for both children and staff in early-childhood settings. You will integrate these concepts into planning, evaluating, and implementing environments and curriculum that emphasize these basic concepts, recognizing the importance of collaboration with families and health professionals. Must be taken A-F.
Topical Outline:
1. Overview of health issues/symptoms in children
2. Healthy policies and procedures in early childhood education settings including documentation of injuries
3. Environmental factors that affect health and safety
4. Teach children about health, safety, and nutrition
5. Overview of child abuse and neglect and the reporting process
6. Key elements of a developmentally appropriate nutrition program
Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify the characteristics of early childhood environments and routines that support safe and healthy development of young children
2. Plan developmentally appropriate learning experiences for the young child designed to teach children about health, safety and nutrition
3. Analyze health requirements, symptoms of common illness and environmental hazards as well as universal precautions to limit the spread of disease and incident of injury
4. Explore the signs of emotional distress, child abuse, and neglect in young children and the role of the mandated reporter
5. Demonstrate knowledge of nutrition basics needed to plan snack and meal menus that mean food program standards
6. Explore community resources designed to support the physical and psychological safety of young children
Prerequisites:
A recommended placement into
READ 0200 or
ESOL 0052 or a recommended completion of
READ 0100 or
ESOL 0042.
