Description:
Spanish 2000 is a follow-up to the Beginning Spanish sequence. It can also be a review for students with two years previous high school experience. This course may also be useful for native speakers interested in learning grammatical concepts and terminology for teaching Spanish to English-speakers. You will build upon vocabulary, review grammar and learn further subtleties of Spanish syntax and idiomatic expressions. You will review present tense, past tenses, commands and subjunctive verb conjugation. You will develop communicative skills and techniques necessary for summarizing, paraphrasing, interpreting and narrating. You will also gain important cultural, historical, sociological and literary insights into the various peoples who speak Spanish throughout the world.
Topical Outline:
1. Presentation and discussion of cultural productions and materials encompassing literature, music, art, films and other media in the target language
2. Linguistic, literary, creative, and analytical based on exposure to and awareness of different cultures and different peoples who share a common language are presented
3. Analysis, creation and presentation of original written artistic/media works in the target language
4. Grammatical Topics: forms and uses of preterite and imperfect, expressing unplanned or unexpected events, por vs. para, hace + time expressions, informal commands, formation and uses of the present subjunctive, past participles as adjectives, and present
5. Vocabulary topics: context-based approach of topics such as family, relationships, arts, natural environment, politics, travel, more advanced survival needs and other contemporary social issues
6. Culture: Students acquire cultural information for the purpose of understanding and appreciating the products, practices, and perspectives of other cultures. Topics included: educational system, housing, political history, and environmental initiatives
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate proficiency in listening & reading of authentic materials and speech at the ACTFL Intermediate Mid level or better
2. Demonstrate skills in speaking and writing at the ACTFL Intermediate Low Level or better. Linguistic skills include emerging usage of commands, subjunctive and use of both preterite and imperfect past tenses, as well as multiple object pronouns. For computer-assisted assignments outside of class, students will demonstrate writing skills at the Intermediate Mid level or better
3. Appreciate and understand a wide range of works of literature, philosophy, and the arts – contemporary as well as traditional – within the target language
4. Demonstrate an understanding of these works within their cultural, artistic, historical, geographical, political, and social context, with emphasis on cultural behavior, ideas, and values. They will also analyze specific issues in a global context, focusing on alternative ways of considering problems and proposing solutions
5. Gain an increased understanding of history, political science, art, and music of the target culture through the target language, analyzing specific issues in a global context, focusing on alternative ways of considering problems and proposing solutions
6. Create original works in the target language which stimulate the creative process, using synthesis, and analysis in the interpretive process
Prerequisites:
SPAN 1100 or
SPAN 1120, or Equivalent, or Two Years of High School Spanish with a Grade of 'C' or Higher, or Instructor Approval
